The Rhyme:
Young David as a shepherd boy
Did tend his flocks with love and joy.
And he possessed a courage rare
He killed a lion and a bear.

Three brothers were enrolled to fight
The Philistines with all their might
He went to see them at the front
As they the enemy did hunt.

Then Israel's soldiers one and all
Did fear a giant 9 feet tall
The Philistines did send him out
Goliath was the name he'd tout

He dared the army out of spite
To send a man for him to fight
The winner's side would rule the day
And all the losers must obey

Saul, Israel's king, did promise strong
Great wealth to him who'd right this wrong
To him who'd fight and would not tarry
Saul would give his girl to marry

So David, youngest one of eight
Of Jesse's sons, was not sedate
Goliath's rant for forty days
Defied God's army and its ways

He volunteered to fight the man
Who stood six cubits and a span
The king told David he was young
And feared his life would soon be done

Then gave the boy his armour cold
To shield him from the giant bold
The kingly armour was refused
For David knew he'd not be bruised

A staff, 5 stones, a sling he took
The giant gave him quite a look
Then laughed a laugh so loud and shrill
He promised that this boy he'd kill

Young David did ignore the word
Goliath shouted so absurd
He knew a victory would be scored
He'd fight now to defend the Lord

He ran forward with his sling
The stone he flung did take its wing
It found its mark and did embed
Real firmly in Goliath's head

The giant fell, his frame was grounded
The Philistines were all astounded
David ran up to his foe
And drew the sword, which he did tow

To make sure this big man was dead
He raised the sword and struck his head
The battle won, the head he'd bring
He took it then to Saul the king

Now Israel's army long did cheer
Their champion conquered without fear
Young David, boy in Jesse's clan
The Lord had helped become a man.
