Jonah and the Whale

Notes from the scriptures:

Jonah commanded to go to Ninevah and preach repentance
He flees to Joppa, boards a ship to Tarshish
Lord sends a storm, crew lightens boat
Shipmaster asks Jonah to call upon God
Lots cast, it falls upon Jonah
Jonah confesses that he is a Hebrew
Men ask what to do
Jonah tells them to cast him into the sea
The do so, but fear the Lord
The sea calms, Jonah swallowed by a big fish

Jonah 2
Jonah prays
He is vomited out on land

Jonah 3
Jonah is again commanded to go to Ninevah
He proclaims destruction in 40 days
People repent in sackcloth and ashes
King proclaims a fast
God repents of the evil proclaimed against them

Jonah 4
Jonah is displeased
He desires to die
Jonah is angry and sits on the east side of the city
The Lord prepares a gourd to shade Jonah
It withers the next day
Jonah is angry with the withering of the gourd
Shall God not spare Ninevah

The Verse:

The Lord told Jonah that he should go
To warn the folks of Ninevah so that they'd know
That they should repent and to the Lord obey
But Jonah wouldn't go, instead he ran away

He got into a boat to sail upon the sea
He thought he'd hide from God, he thought “He won't find me”
A storm came up and tossed the boat from here to there
And gave the sailors on the ship a great big scare

They went to casting lots to find out who's to blame
And then the lot fell right upon old Jonah's name
The crew began to stare him down, and gathered round
It seem like this would be the time to see him drowned

Jonah told the men that they should do what's best
And then he said to throw him in, 'twas his request
They did as he did tell them, it was his own wish
And Jonah then was swallowed by a great big fish

He stayed three days within the fish, deep down inside
And prayed while he went upon a big fish ride
And then the fish came to the shore and spit him out
And Jonah went into the town to talk about

The things the people then could do so they'd repent
And choose the right 'cause that was why he had been sent
The people listened to his words and they did do
The things they should and God was who they listened to

Then Jonah became angry 'bout the things they'd done
So he went to be alone, he'd be the only one
Then the Lord prepared a gourd to shield him from the heat
But it died and on Jonah's head the sun did beat

So Jonah became mad about the plant that died
But the Lord talked to him about his foolish pride
To get upset about the plant he didn't grow
Because folks are more important Jonah, don't you know?
